The Inspiring History of Caran d’Ache

Founded in 1915 in Geneva, Caran d’Ache takes its name from the famous French caricaturist Emmanuel Poiré, also known as Caran d’Ache. From its inception, the brand has been committed to creating exceptionally crafted writing instruments, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary innovation.

The Fixpencil, a clip mechanical pencil, was invented in 1929 by Geneva engineer Carl Schmid. Introduced to the market by Caran d’Ache a year later, it was registered under the trademark Fixpencil. As the world’s first clip mechanical pencil with a mechanism enabling the use of different diameter leads, it was initially crafted from bakelite and later transitioned to a fully metal construction.

Derived from the Russian word for « pencil, » Caran d’Ache originates from the Turkish term « kara-tash, » meaning « black stone » in reference to graphite. Caran d’Ache is a family-owned business currently led by Carole Hubscher, representing the fourth generation actively involved in top-level management since the 1930s

Exceptional Craftsmanship

What sets Caran d’Ache products apart is an unwavering commitment to exceptional craftsmanship. Each pencil is meticulously crafted by skilled artisans, ensuring impeccable quality. Rigorous material selection, precision manufacturing techniques, and meticulous attention to detail make each pencil a work of art in itself.

Innovation and Sustainability

While deeply rooted in tradition, the Caran d’Ache brand embraces innovation. It continually strives to push the boundaries of creativity by developing cutting-edge technologies to enhance the performance of its products. Additionally, sustainability is at the core of their approach, with a commitment to environmentally friendly practices in pencil production.

The company is committed to producing exclusively within its Geneva-based factories. A crucial step towards this commitment is the establishment of a new manufacturing plant, for which the municipality of Bernex has recently given its approval.  This newly designated zone is intended to house Caran d’Ache’s future manufacturing facility, with the permit application process currently underway.

An Incomparable Palette of Colors

Caran d’Ache is also renowned for its outstanding color range. Whether in the world of artistic colored pencils, high-end graphite pencils, or elegant ballpoint pens, the brand offers a rich and diverse palette that captivates artists, writers, and professionals worldwide.

The Caran d’Ache pencil is a childhood staple, commonly used in Swiss schools. Beyond pencils, Swiss students and artists favor the water-resistant Neocolor wax pastel. Loved by artists, educators, and students at Fine Arts schools worldwide, Neocolor earned global recognition since its pioneering creation in 1952 at Caran d’Ache workshops in Geneva. Renowned for its name alone, Neocolor revolutionized the realms of drawing and art education.
